Experiment with different forms of writing and explore character and plot creation with Sophie Mellor, Artist.

Information from the workshop leader:

“A TV reality star US president tweets his policies from the White House. With the previously unbelievable becoming the #NewNormal is everything now real fiction?
In this creative writing session we’ll look at the mechanics of fiction (character, location, plot, conflict, resolution). We’ll experiment with different forms of creative writing from twitter to algorithms to Taylor Swift, via first, second and third person points of view, using music, paint and fortune cookies.”

Sophie Mellor is an artist who uses writing, amongst other things, in her art practice. Recent examples include a co-authored novel ‘Life Chances’ written with low income families in Bristol and Cardiff; a GPS triggered smartphone app short story ‘Here Comes Everybody’; and script writing for ‘Live Model’ a performative public information film exploring regulation. Learn how to find and take better photos with your phone camera with Peter Davey, Plymouth Based Artist & Lecturer.

Information from the workshop leader:

“I am interested in Street Photography and in shapes, forms, objects and people and the works of Keith Arnett, Robert Frank, Martin Parr and William Eggleston, and the notion of ideas that question Beauty and Art and capturing the moment. It’s the idea of play and wonder that shapes the everyday documenting the here and now
and its role in contemporary society that images are only just a reflected displacement of humanity in relationship to frozen clips. If you don’t capture the decisive moment there is every likely possibility that moment will be lost to space and time. Even then you never truly own anything as once you put your images out to the world online or in a gallery space you never truly own them again, as the viewer might know nothing about your own personal view of the image and will form their own interpretation of the image to create new identities, new narratives and that is the reality of street photography and any Art Form. The beauty of a phone in your pocket is the same idea of early photography, you can hide and blend into society looking for possibilities to capture and the images can be more raw and personal that you could not get on a bigger camera.”

Peter Davey is an artist and member of Wonderzoo, Flameworks, Timebank and Visual Arts Plymouth.

Learn how to write on art and events and how to carry out an interview with Lucy Rollins, PAC Assistant Curator.

Lucy has been studying and working as a Contemporary Art Curator for nearly a decade now. As a Curator, she has lots of ideas and tips about how you can get to the heart of what you want to talk about when it comes to ART. Together we will look at how Artists and Curators talk to each other and then put the word out into the world; looking at social media, print and IRL convo.

FREE WORKSHOPS FOR YOUNG ARTISTS!

YEA Plymouth has been working in collaboration with Horizon, Plymouth Culture and Plymouth Arts Centre to organise a series of six free specialist skills workshops for creative young people aged 11-19 in Plymouth.

YEA Plymouth is an independent organisation created and led by young emerging artists, designers, photographers, writers and makers.  We have helped organise zine workshops throughout 2017, introducing zine-making and self-publishing to many young people around Plymouth, and in September we released our first publication, a limited edition zine called YEA ’17 which featured ten local young artists and was distributed exclusively at the Plymouth Arts Weekender.

Our follow-up project to releasing our zine is this series of six specialist skills workshops.  The topic and leader of each workshop has been chosen by YEA Plymouth members but the workshops are open to all local creative people aged between 11 and 19.  Horizon and Plymouth Culture are funding the project and Plymouth Arts Centre are hosting the workshops, and both Horizon and PAC have provided YEA with lots of support and advice throughout to help us make this project happen!

There are limited spaces at each workshop so if you want to come along to any of the workshops, you must book a place!  Book your place by popping in to the Plymouth Arts Centre box office from 1pm Tuesday-Saturday or call on 01752 206114.  Alternatively use the links (below) to book online.
